Self Critique

In BOHS We Trust, March 2011

Synopsis-
In BOHS We Trust, we see the Biotech Original Humanoid Servant, or BOHS, created as the ultimate helper, the answer to our daily lives. By placing our trust in BOHS we are supposed to reach a new level of comfort. Until we see the technology become flawed and the chaos that follows.

Intent-
I want this piece to make the viewers laugh at the ridiculousness of the BOHS and the situation it has been placed in while thinking that these things are part of our technological production and that there is the possibility of technology turning on mankind just like in my animation.

Inspiration-
The source of my main idea was founded in the works of Issac Asimov -examples including Foundation and Robots and Empire- and the book series The Rings of the Master by Jack L. Chalker. These works are important to me because more than anything they make me think about their subjects in ways that hae always brought new inspiration to me whenever I read them.

Theme-
The theme of this project is the trust we place in technology and the possibility of that trust being betrayed.

Strenght-
The real strength to this piece would have to be the stylization within the piece and the humor used to keep the story moving.

Problems-
The main problem with my piece is the audio device I used to record my narration wasn't the best and to get a decent audio I had to hold it fairly close to my face, thus the vocals would "pop" when I was too loud. I need to rerecord the narration with a better recording device that I should be getting from an instructor. I also need to improve my work pace when it comes to creating assets to use in animation.

Learning-
My main frustration was that it took so long for me to create the drawings used in the piece. While the quality was good it took too long to make the individual pieces. I discovered during this project that while I may be slow at making the art, the actual animation process went very quickly and quite easily. I also learned that I need to work a lot harder on an idea while it's still on paper before I start working on it, for while I have found I'm very adaptive, too much of a change in script or production is frustrating.

Finished Product

In BOHS We Trust from Nick Brinker on Vimeo.

We trust people. We trust objects, ideas, and theories. But more importantly we trust technology. We trust because it is in the human nature to trust. We trust technology, no matter how advanced it is. We see technology idealized. We refuse to see the problems with technology as we integrate technology more and more into our lives, to the point where we become inseparable from technology and every aspect of our civilization is somehow governed by technology.

In my animation, In BOHS We Trust, we see the Biotech Original Humanoid Servant, or BOHS, created as the ultimate helper, the answer to our daily lives. By placing our trust in BOHS we are supposed to reach a new level of comfort. My intent with this animation is to present a satirical view of our trust in technology and the commercialism that presents technology to the public. The more we put our trust in technology and the more advanced the technology is, the greater the possibility of technology becoming unstable and destructive. Until we find ourselves governed by technology, our lives ruined, and our civilization more mechanical than ever before?
